To Be Mike Haywood

Reports surfaced that Pitt had possibly found its next head coach in Oklahoma State offensive coordinator, Dana Holgorsen. Those reports, however, appear to be false as Holgorsen is likely moving to West Virginia to serve as an offensive coordinator for one season and then replace Bill Stewart in 2012.
Holgorsen was the toast of the town and with good reason. He had run some of the most successful offenses in the country at Oklahoma State and, previously, Texas Tech.
So with Holgorsen now off the board, what’s next for Pitt? Well, as Paul Zeise of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports, it could be Miami of Ohio’s Michael Haywood. Seriously.
Haywood led Miami to the MAC title this season with a 9-4 record. He was also previously the Notre Dame offensive coordinator.
While this could turn out to be a good hire, I’m a bit skeptical. I’ll get more into this later if it turns out to be true, but I still believe that Tom Bradley would be a better fit.
Michael Haywood has been hired as the new head football coach at the University of Pittsburgh, according to a report today from ESPN’s Joe Schad.
Haywood, who has coached Miami University to a dramatic turnaround this season, has agreed to a five-year contract and the hiring could be announced by Pitt on Thursday, Schad’s report said.
Another report, in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, said today that Haywood was interviewed by Pitt last week and was the first candidate who was brought back for a second interview.
Efforts to reach Haywood on Wednesday have been unsuccessful. He has been scheduled to hold a press conference with local media on Friday to discuss Miami’s upcoming appearance in the GoDaddy.com Bowl in Mobile, Ala. on Jan. 6.

He has been away from the Miami campus for most of the time since Miami’s victory in the Mid-American Conference Championship Game on Dec. 3. After the team returned to Oxford from that game, Haywood had said he and other RedHawk coaches would be out of town recruiting.
Miami senior safety Jordan Gafford, a two-year co-captain, said earlier on Wednesday the players were aware of the news from Pittsburgh which suggested the probability that Haywood would be hired there and had been asked not to comment.
Gafford did say, though, that he would be happy regardless of what happened, happy about Haywood getting a major coaching position or happy for the RedHawks for having him remain as their coach.
Miami has held one practice since its victory over NIU. Its scheduled practice for Thursday morning has been cancelled due to the anticipated inclement weather.
Haywood is in his second season with the RedHawks and has gained national recognition for turning around a program that finished 1-11 last year.
Miami has made the biggest improvement in terms of victories in college football this year with its 9-4 record.
The RedHawks won the MAC title game with a 26-21 upset over Northern Illinois, which was ranked No. 24 by the Associated Press at the time.
Since then Miami has received eight points in both major Top 25 polls, which puts the RedHawks 29th in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and 30th in the AP poll.
Haywood, 46, was an assistant coach at seven schools before coming to Miami.
He was the offensive coordinator and running backs coach at Notre Dame (2005-08), where he was named NCAA Division I-A Assistant Coach of the Year in 2005.
He also coached at Texas (2003-04), LSU (1995-2002), Ball State (1993-94), Ohio (1991-92), Army (1989-90) and Minnesota (1988).
